Dominica's tourism history is marked by its unique volcanic landscapes and natural beauty, which have attracted visitors for centuries. The island's economy has historically been based on agriculture, particularly bananas, but tourism has become a significant contributor to the local economy. Dominica's volcanic landscape is characterized by a high density of active volcanoes, with nine volcanic centers contributing to the island's geological features and ecological richness. There are about 365 rivers and streams emanating from 35 watershed areas into which the island is divided.
Domenica is one of our favorite islands to visit – we have been there about 6 times but it was the first for Biz. We had arranged to do one of our favorite excursions – river tubing up in the mountains 😊. We got off the ship early in the morning and got on a small taxi with about 5 other people. The drive to the starting point took about an hour and went up and down steep winding roads on the coastal mountains to the other side of the island. We got off the taxi and got suited up in helmet and life jacket and lined up to board our inner tubes. There were about 40 people on the excursion and about 6 guides to make sure that nobody got stuck in the trees or on the rocks in the river. The trip down the river was about 5 miles long and took just over an hour to get to the end. It was a very enjoyable ride mixing slow stretches of floating down the river to fast, spinning exciting white water rapids. Blue sky, floating under leafy trees along bamboo lined banks it was a fun, exciting time. On the way back we stopped at Jaco Falls for a few minutes to look at the waterfall and the pools below. Returning back to Roseau we looked around the craft markets, went for a drink at the local resort and dive spa Fort Young Hotel, and then headed back to the ship.
